SURFER HOUSE
Surfer House is our second micro-housing prototype, conceived specifically as a shelter for a surfer living in Puerto Escondido. Inspired by the surfer’s simple and focused lifestyle, the architecture embodies minimalism and functionality, creating a retreat that prioritizes rest, protection from the intense tropical sun, and access to refreshing bathing facilities.
Understanding the surfer’s daily rhythm was fundamental to the design. Surfers typically go to bed early and rise just before dawn to catch the best waves, making restful sleep a critical design consideration. With cost efficiency as a key priority, the project team focused first on optimizing the built area. The result is a compact 40-square-meter hut divided into two functional modules: a front module housing the living room and bedroom, and a rear service module containing the kitchen and bathroom.
The layout embraces an open-plan concept, fostering a sense of spaciousness despite the small footprint and ensuring unobstructed ocean views throughout the living spaces. Natural cross-ventilation is achieved by strategically placing openings on both the front and rear façades, enhancing comfort by allowing cool ocean breezes to flow through the hut.
In keeping with the ethos of simplicity and durability, the design forgoes air conditioning and traditional glass windows. Instead, the hut uses wooden shutters equipped with insect screens, providing protection at night while maintaining airflow and a connection with the outdoors.
Constructed primarily of concrete, the structure is built to withstand the harsh coastal climate, including heavy storms and humidity, while requiring virtually no maintenance over time. Sustainability features include a stormwater harvesting system with filtration to supply non-potable water needs, and photovoltaic panels that generate electricity to power the kitchen appliances and electrical outlets.
Surfer House stands as a resilient, economical, and thoughtfully designed refuge, perfectly tailored to support a surfer’s lifestyle with minimal environmental impact while maximizing comfort and connection to nature.
